No. Al’s Formal Wear is no longer in business. The Texas-based tuxedo rental chain closed all of its stores suddenly in August 2023, and its operator filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Alformal is an independent online store and has no connection to Al’s Formal Wear.

What happened to Al’s Formal Wear

Al’s Formal Wear was a long-running chain of tuxedo rental and formal-wear stores, with locations across Texas and neighbouring states. Its roots go back to a tailor shop on Main Street in Fort Worth, according to Wikipedia.

In August 2023, the stores closed with no warning. ABC13 in Houston reported that the chain “suddenly closed with no warning,” leaving customers who had already paid for wedding and prom rentals without their formalwear. The company that ran the business, Tip Top Tux LLC, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which means liquidation rather than a restructuring.

Is there an official Al’s Formal Wear website now?

Websites using the Al’s Formal Wear name may still appear in search results, but they are not the original retailer, and there are no Al’s stores to visit or rent from. If a site offers Al’s rentals or appointments today, treat it with caution.

If you had paid for an order

  • Contact your card issuer. If you paid by credit or debit card for a rental or purchase you never received, ask your bank about disputing the charge. Card issuers set their own time limits, so act quickly.
  • Check the bankruptcy case. In a Chapter 7 case, customers who are owed money can file a claim with the bankruptcy court. Recovery isn’t guaranteed.

Renting vs. buying now

Tuxedo rentals often cost about as much as a budget tuxedo you keep. When we last checked Amazon, well-rated three-piece tuxedo sets started at around $55 to $80, often with a vest and bow tie included. If you’ll wear a tuxedo more than once, for several weddings, proms or galas, buying usually works out cheaper.
